Alumni Medalists Honored During Commencement

Each year, the University bestows 10 Alumni Medals for diligent work on behalf of Alma Mater. This year, in addition to having their names announced at commencement, the 10 honored alumni will march in the ceremony, reviving a tradition of old.

Joseph Anthony Ciccio Jr. (SEAS'79, Dental'83): An assistant clinical professor at the College of Dental Medicine and a practicing orthodontist, Ciccio served as a member of the school's admission committee and as president of both the Dental Alumni Association and the Orthodontic Alumni Association. He has received numerous awards for his work at and service to Columbia.

Bernard Goldman (CC'46, SEAS'47, Journalism'48): Goldman, the president of Insurance Financial Service in Lakewood, Colorado, helped make the Colorado Alumni Club one of Columbia's most successful during his tenure as president from 1974 to 1985. He has served on the board of directors of the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) and continues to conduct alumni interviews in his home state.

Edward T.C. Lau (Business'73): A co-founder of First American International Bank, Lau recently stepped down as president of the Columbia University alumni group in Hong Kong. A longtime volunteer and donor, he spent a great deal of time and energy building affinity among alumni in Asia. Lau now serves on the inaugural board of the Columbia Alumni Association.

Barbara Voorhis Levy (GS'48)
Barbara Voorhis Levy (GS'48): Voorhis Levy helped establish an alumni association for the School of General Studies and served as its first president. She has also been a member of the school's Friends Committee since 1978. Her varied career includes stints as an editor, real estate investor and manager, and community board member.

Susan A. Nayowith (SSW'84): Nayowith is a former member of the School of Social Work Advisory Council and a past president of the board of directors for its alumni association. She currently co-chairs the school's Alumni/Student Relations Committee and is director of the Office of Client Advocacy, Policy and Planning at the New York City Department of Homeless Services.

Renan Pierre
Renan Pierre (CC'86, SEAS'87)

Renan Pierre (CC'86, SEAS'87): Pierre is a partner in the firm of Sherman Pierre Architects and has long worked on behalf of both fellow alumni and current students. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Columbia College Alumni Association, where he is the vice president for alumni of color, and on the inaugural board of the University-wide Columbia Alumni Association. In addition, Pierre is a member of the selection committees for the Alexander Hamilton Medal dinner and the John Jay Scholarship dinner. He was especially active in the celebrations for Columbia's 250th anniversary.

Clyde E.
Clyde E."Skip" Rankin III (SIPA'74, Law'75)

Clyde E."Skip" Rankin III (SIPA'74, Law'75): A member of the Columbia Law School board of visitors since 1991, Rankin has long helped plan his class reunions, during which he typically serves as master of ceremonies at the class dinner--working tirelessly to raise money on the school's behalf. Over the years, he has participated in a variety of other social, academic and networking programs for the school and its students. Rankin is a partner at the law firm of Baker & McKenzie.

Wendy Supovitz Reilly (Barnard'63): Co-president of her class and a regional representative since 1997, Supovitz Reilly currently serves as director-at-large of the Alumnae Association of Barnard College. She was instrumental in establishing Barnard's Project Continuum committee, offering innovative programming for alumnae over the age of 50. Supovitz Reilly has served on the boards of a number of additional educational and cultural institutions and has also worked as a psychotherapist.

Alan M. Silberstein (SEAS'69): Since graduating from Columbia, Silberstein has consistently given his time and expertise to SEAS. A former board member, vice president and executive vice president of the school's alumni association, he is now serving his third consecutive term as a member of the Dean's Engineering Council. The former president and chief executive officer of Western Union, Silberstein currently serves as the president of Allston Associates, a management services company.

P. Roy Vagelos (P&S'54, Hon. Sc.D.'90): A pioneering researcher in biomedical education and commercial pharmaceutics, Vagelos has served Columbia in many capacities over the years. In 1987, he received the Gold Medal for distinguished achievements in academic medicine from the alumni association at the College of Physicians & Surgeons. He now leads the campaign for the Medical School. In his professional life, Vagelos was head of research and later chairman and chief executive officer of Merck & Co.
