Columbia Economists Join International Herald Tribune's Globalization Blog

On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the International Herald Tribune (IHT) and Columbia University announced the launch of a new collaboration. Every month, one of Columbia University's renowned voices on the international economy will answer questions from readers of Managing Globalization, one of the Paris-based daily's weblogs.

Professors Jagdish Bhagwati, Joseph Stiglitz and others members of Columbia University's economics department will take turns interacting with readers. Daniel Altman, the Herald Tribune's global economics correspondent and 'Managing Globalization' columnist, will act as a moderator by selecting questions submitted online each month.

Professor Bhagwati will be the first guest, with his commentaries appearing on (Tuesday night for) Wednesday, September 13. Questions are being collected online as of September 5. The Web address for the blog is blogs.iht.com/globalization

Michael Oreskes, the IHT's executive editor, said, "Today the International Herald Tribune launches an exciting new collaboration that will give its readers access to some of the world's brightest economic minds. Messrs. Bhagwati and Stiglitz are among the world's best-known commentators on globalization, and Stiglitz is the winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics."

Janet Currie, the new chair of Columbia University's Economics department, commented, "Columbia's economics department has a number of areas with special strength. We have tremendous historic strength in the area of international and development economics; the study of poverty and inequality from both a domestic and an international perspective; and the study of international and domestic monetary policy--to name only a few."
