Academic Information Systems (AcIS) has announced that it is adding an additional file server to improve the performance of e-mail and other computing services important to the Columbia community. This will require taking the existing file server out of service while a portion of the customer files are moved to the new system. The outage will start at 7 p.m. Friday (Nov. 12) and last approximately 24 hours.
During this period, AcIS e-mail users and CUNIX users will not be able to access the files in their accounts, including old mail and personal Web pages. Class library accounts will also be unavailable. No e-mail will be rejected (sent back to senders) during the outage.
It WILL, however, be possible to read and send new e-mail during the outage by following the directions listed here.
Other services, such as dial-in, Columbia Web services (except personal home pages), ColumbiaNet and CLIO, will not be affected.
AcIS apologizes for the short notice. The severity of recent problems has dictated that the situation be treated as an emergency, and the new file server be employed as quickly as possible. AcIS hopes to be able to finish the move in less than 24 hours in order to provide you with access to your files even earlier than 7 p.m. on Saturday. Call 854-1919 or check System Notes for current information.
