United States Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) and United States Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Arthur Levitt will host an Investors' Town Meeting at Alfred Lerner Hall at Columbia University on Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event is organized by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and sponsored by Columbia Law School.
The Investors' Town Meeting is an opportunity for everyday investors to hear from the experts on how to invest wisely and achieve financial security. Chairman Levitt will offer tips on how to make informed investment decisions, monitor current investments, and avoid problems. Senator Schumer, a member of the Senate Subcommittee on Securities, will talk about online investing and the benefits and hazards investors face when investing through the Internet. Eric Dinallo, assistant attorney general in charge at the New York Bureau of Investor Protection and Securities, will also speak. Investors will have the opportunity to ask questions and attend seminars hosted by investment groups such as The Bond Market Association, The Investment Company Institute, The Securities Industry Association, and the American Savings Education Council.
United States Senator Charles E. Schumer is in his first term representing New York State. He currently serves as a member of the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, the Judiciary Committee, and the Rules Committee. Prior to becoming senator, he was a nine-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the Ninth Congressional District in Brooklyn and Queens. He has introduced legislation to ensure that investors are protected from the unique hazards associated with online investing.
Arthur Levitt is the 25th Chairman of the SEC. He was first appointed by President Clinton in 1993 and then reappointed to a second five-year term in 1998. As SEC Chairman, Arthur Levitt's top priority is investor protection. Under his leadership, the Commission has reformed the debt markets; improved broker sales and pay practices; promoted the use of plain English in investment literature as well as in SEC communications with the public; and encouraged foreign companies to list on U.S. markets. Chairman Levitt created the Office of Investor Education and Assistance and hosts Investors' Town Meetings six times a year around the country.
The Town Meeting is free of charge and open to the public. It will be held in the Auditorium at Alfred Lerner Hall, Columbia University, 2920 Broadway (at West 115th Street), New York, NY.
