Robert O'Meally: Jazz and American Culture
Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and other jazz greats produced an original American sound based on spontaneity and improvisation. Their contribution is the focus of a new area of study at Columbia, the Center for Jazz Studies, founded by Robert O'Meally, the Zora Neale Hurston Professor of American Literature.
