Americans Want to Hear Poetry's Expression of Truthful Feelings in Times of Disaster
Poetry does not have a definable place in American life except in times of triumph or disaster like the September 11 attacks, when people want and need to hear the expression of "truthful feelings," says poet Richard Howard, Columbia professor of writing. Although poetry often expresses the feelings of one person to another, after disasters like September 11 poetry "sums up" the feelings of many people.
