Senator Clinton Addresses Conference on Plight of the Roma
On Nov. 8, Columbia held an international conference on contemporary issues facing the Roma people, the largest minority group in Europe. New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton delivered the keynote address at the daylong program. Three panel sessions convened European and U.S. experts to discuss the history of the Roma in the 20th century and the current situation for millions of Roma living throughout Eastern and Central Europe. Current and future EU policies to address racial and social discrimination and human rights concerns also were discussed. The conference was hosted by President Lee C. Bollinger and the School of International and Public Affairs' Institute for the Study of Europe.
