The Future of Utopia in History: Literary and Cultural Modernism

In this March 23 lecture, Hayden White, the Bonsall Professor of Comparative Literature at Stanford University, examines literary and cultural modernism, modernist historical thinking and political utopianism, and the future of the community. In looking at history as a discipline, he argues against the study of history as a social science and recommends recovering history's roots in early modern traditions.
