Civil Engineering's Betti, Smyth Monitor 'Health' of City's Bridge Cables

Raimondo Betti Andrew Smyth

Civil engineering professors Raimondo Betti and Andrew Smyth discuss novel methods to monitor the "health" of bridge cables, including a first-of-its-kind mockup at a Columbia lab that will simulate real-world stresses on bridge cables. The goal of the project is to design a monitoring system that provides real-time information on the health of every cable.
