Heads of state from Finland, Indonesia, Georgia, Rwanda, Poland, Sierra Leone, Pakistan and Iraq, as well as the Dalai Lama participated in the opening events of Columbia's yearlong World Leaders Forum.

Columbia Welcomes the Class of 2009
On Monday, Aug. 29, more than 1,000 first-years took a break from their move-in tasks to attend convocation on the South Lawn and say good-bye to their parents. Ninety countries are represented in the class of 2009.

Columbia Celebrates Commencement 2005
Stark rays of sunshine finally presided over this year's commencement ceremony as President Lee C. Bollinger addressed over 30,000 parents, family, alumni, faculty and the Class of 2005. The event, which for the previous two years had been battered by steady rainfall, marked the largest graduating class in Columbia's history, with more than 11,000 students receiving degrees.

The Gates Brighten Central Park
A cold New York winter has been brightened with the 23-mile-long installation of The Gates, Central Park, New York City, 1979-2005 by husband-and-wife artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The 7,500 gates are adorned with free hanging saffron-colored panels. Jean Magnano Bollinger accompanied a group of students on a tour of the exhibition, which runs through Feb. 27. The Columbia University Arts Initiative is sponsoring transportation to Central Park to view the artwork. The free buses leave from Amsterdam and 116th at noon, 12:45 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:15 p.m., 3 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and at 3 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The buses return from 81st Street and Central Park West about 20 minutes later.
