It is inspiring and reassuring to have the confidence of our distinguished alumni and friends, as indicated by their gifts to the Campaign and by the words of encouragement they have offered to me during encounters here in New York and at alumni gatherings around the world. In striving to be worthy of their generosity and vision, I am fortunate to work with outstanding faculty and administrative colleagues. And all of us at the University owe a particular debt to our distinguished Trustees, led by Chair Stephen Friedman '62L, for their guidance and for the expertise they have devoted to Columbia.
In my inaugural address five years ago, I called on every member of the University community to join in building an even better Columbia. Together we have moved decisively in that constructive direction. I thank all of those who have contributed so effectively to that common effort, and I call on all of us to continue to advance our shared enterprise.
