SIPA's Seznec Examines Prospect for Democracy in Saudi Arabia

In spite of the authoritarian regime in Saudi Arabia, Jean Francois Seznec, adjunct professor of international and public affairs, sees a change occurring. The population is supportive of democracy, the press is freer than it was 20 years ago, and the key issue, he says, is succession. The paradox is that the only way for Saudi Arabia to democratize is for a very strong king to come to power and pressure the ruling family to open the system, says Seznec.
