Joan Judge Explores Chinese Utilization of Heroines as a Means of Cultural Education, Reformation

"Within the long and deep tradition of female biography, women's lives were the subject of stories, the object of instruction, and the medium for larger conversations, says Joan Judge. Judge is a visiting scholar at the School of Historical Studies, Institute for Advanced Study and assistant professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. "The historical Chinese women served as repositories of timeless cultural values, while the modern Western heroines reflected the future," she says. In this lecture sponsored by the East Asian Institute, Judge explores the Chinese utilization of both national and international heroines as a means of cultural education and reformation.
