Rural Chinese Peasants Need to Become Urban Residents and Consumers to Sustain Market Economy, Says Zhiyue Bo
Marketization, transitioning from a planned economy to market economy, globalization and urbanization are three problems facing 21st century Chinese provincial leaders, says Zhiyue Bo, chair of international studies at St. John Fisher College. With 70 percent of China's residents living in rural areas, Bo suggests that peasants need to be converted into urban residents, and then consumers in order to create a market and sustain the economy.
