Politically, Hong Kong has enjoyed a high degree of autonomy, people are vocal and they take all opportunities to voice their views, but the mood of the people was greatly affected by the 1997 Asian financial crisis, says Sarah Wu of the Hong Kong Economic Trade Council in a lecture sponsored by the East Asian Institute.
