U.S. Government Would Censor War Reporting in Iraq, Say Journalists
The U.S. government has long played a role in censoring wartime reporting, and this pattern will continue to a significant degree in the event of a war with Iraq, say journalists at a recent discussion hosted by the Graduate School of Journalism. Many news organizations will have both embedded reporters-- traveling with a particular unit of soldiers -- and independently operating reporters. Panelists say ground rules for journalists who are embedded could be very restrictive, depending on the commanding officer and the public affairs officer in charge. Panelists include: The New York Times' Christopher Hedges and Roger Cohen, Ashleigh Banfield of MSNBC and Vin Alabiso of the Associated Press. Floyd Abrams, the William J. Brennan Jr. Visiting Professor of First Amendment Issues, moderates the discussion.
