Carolyn Kissane, adjunct professor international and transcultural affairs at Teachers College, recounts her research on the teaching of history in Russia and Kazakhstan, and discusses how teachers dealt with changes in curriculum and programs in the Soviet period and the Kazak independent period. Through access to training and professional development, Kazak teachers have brought more critical thinking and new methodologies into the classroom, she observes.
