General Counsel
Since 1997, Elizabeth J. Keefer has served as the General Counsel of Columbia University. Prior to coming to Columbia, Ms. Keefer held the position of General Counsel at Teledyne, Inc. (1995-1997). She also was a partner in the international law firm of Hughes, Hubbard and Reed (1992-1995), where she specialized in international law and government affairs. In addition, Ms. Keefer has extensive government experience, beginning her legal career in Washington, D.C., as an antitrust lawyer for the Federal Trade Commission. In 1982, she joined the U.S. Department of State in the Office of the Legal Adviser. Ms. Keefer later served as Deputy Undersecretary of the United States Air Force for International Affairs from 1989 to 1992.
Ms. Keefer received her undergraduate degree in Morningside Heights, graduating cum laude with a B.A. in Political Science from Barnard College in 1971. She received her J.D. with honors from George Washington University in 1977. She is admitted to practice law in New York State and the District of Columbia.
