Associate General Counsel
In May 2005, Jeffrey M. Sears, Ph.D., joined the Office of the General Counsel as Assistant General Counsel. He is a member of the Patent and Licensing Group, focusing his practice on patent prosecution in the physical sciences. Prior to coming to Columbia, he was a Patent Associate at the law firm Winston & Strawn (2004-2005). He was also a Patent Associate at the law firm Foley Hoag (2000-2004).
Mr. Sears has a number of degrees in physics, earning his S.B. from MIT in 1993, then going on to do graduate work at SUNY Stony Brook, where he earned an M.A. in 1995 and a Ph.D. in 1998. Following his Ph.D., he attended law school at NYU, where he received his J.D. in 2001. He is admitted to practice law in Massachusetts and New York, and also before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
