Summer Programs

There are a number of ways to undertake summer study abroad. If you wish to study abroad in the summer and receive credit, there are two possible paths you can follow. First, in keeping with SEAS policy on summer school, students who study abroad on a Columbia program will receive full credit for all courses. Columbia sponsors summer programs in France, Brazil, the Dominican republic, China, Italy and Japan. For more information on these programs, see Columbia Sponsored Summer Programs.

Your second choice is to participate in an Approved Summer Program for language or non-technical credit. The Faculty Committee for Study Abroad has reviewed and approved a number of programs in diverse geographic and linguistic areas for summer language and regional study. Most of these program are sponsored by other US-based institutions, some are directly administered by foreign institutions of higher education. In order to use any language work undertaken abroad towards the Columbia degree, students will need to get academic approval for credit from Dean Carpenter(105 Carman). In cases of certain advanced language classes, students may be required to obtain the approval of the applicable department in advance.

If you would like to earn non-technical credit for work taken during the summer, you must get approval from your CSA Advisor in advance, in addition to approval from Dean Carpenter.
