Photo & Essay Contest
The annual “Cross-Cultural Connections” contest provides students returning from studying abroad with an opportunity to share in a creative way their experiences with students who are considering studying abroad.
In an effort to further enhance and recognize the academic and cultural experience of Columbia students studying abroad, the faculty Committee on Study Abroad sponsors a contest for which students may submit photographs and/or writings that are responsive to their study abroad experience and that express their cultural understanding in new creative ways. Submissions are evaluated by an ad hoc faculty committee of the Committee on Study Abroad on the basis of how well they demonstrate an appreciation of the local perspective, an understanding of how the extraordinary can be the ordinary, and an awareness of the ways in which “the other” is also a reflection of oneself.
This year's winning submissions come from two students who studied in Africa and Asia. To see each winner's full portfolio and information on each photo, click beneath the photo below.
