Please note that this online application is no longer available. The new online application will be available by the end of December 2009.
Meanwhile if you would like to know what the application requirements are or if you want to begin preparing your application materials, you can review the items below because the application materials will not change. You can begin to write your personal statement, request transcripts, and think about who will write your recommendations. You should also make sure you have a valid passport by the time of application.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PASSPORTS: Most consulates will only issue a visa good for a passport that is valid for at least 3-6 months past the program end date. If your passport does not meet this requirement, it is likely you will need to renew. Remember that passports can take several weeks to renew and plan accordingly.
For the Kyoto program you will be required to provide current passport information shortly after you receive your admissions decision.

How to Apply
All required application materials may be submitted as part of the online application, except official transcripts. An admissions decision will not be released until we have received your official transcript. Complete applications are due by the deadline. A complete application consists of the following:
- Completed online application form.
- $50 application fee. Credit card information must be provided on the application before it can be submitted. The fee is waived for KCJS member school students.
- Statement of purpose about your academic and personal goals. This can be uploaded into the online application.
- For Advanced Japanese, the personal statement should be handwritten in Japanese—approximately 1000 characters. Feel free to consult a dictionary but please do not have another person review the statement since the statement should be an accurate reflection of your writing.
- For Classical Japanese, the statement should be 500 words and can be written in English but please indicate the number of kanji that you have studied.
- Completed online language recommendation form.
- Completed online study abroad approval form. Undergraduate students should meet with a study abroad advisor on their home campuses. Graduate students do not need to submit this form.
- Completed online faculty recommendation form. Only required for students applying to enroll in Classical Japanese. All other students do not need to submit this form.
- Transcript. To expedite the admissions process, you will be asked to upload a scanned copy of your transcript into the online application. However to complete the application, you must submit an official transcript to the Office of Global Programs.
- Completed KCJS Scholarship Application, if applicable. Please submit to the Office of Global Programs.

Once you have completed the online portions of the application, please submit your transcript and, if applicable, scholarship application and any home-school related materials in one envelope to:
