Program Information

Shidarezakura in Maruyama Park
The six-week KCJS Summer Program in Advanced and Classical Japanese offers intensive training for highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students who have completed three years of Japanese or the equivalent. Field trips, guest lectures, and other activities that utilize Kyoto’s rich cultural resources complement classroom instruction. Courses are taught by the KCJS language instructors and visiting faculty from KCJS member schools.

Students may apply for one of the following:

Advanced Japanese
This course aims to strengthen proficiency in spoken and written Japanese for academic and professional pursuits. Students are divided into three sections with small class sizes in order to provide an optimal language learning environment.

Introduction to Classical Japanese
This course offers students a unique opportunity to study the classical Japanese language in Kyoto, where it flourished for well over a thousand years. The curriculum incorporates visits to some of the important cultural and historical sites associated with this great literary tradition.
