The Columbia University Organization of Pakistani Students
In Collaboration with the NYU Pakistani Students Association
Proudly Present
HANGAMA 2009
3:00-5:00 PM April 19th, 2009 on Low Steps
Each year, the CU Organization of Pakistani Students (OPS) holds a Mock Pakistani Wedding called Hangama. The Groom comes on his white horse from NYU to 'wed' his CU Bride. The groom is usually a member of the NYU Pakistani Students Association, while the Columbia bride is a non-South Asian senior whose identity is not revealed until the actual event. The bride and groom are both dressed in traditional attire and the wedding takes place with all of the rituals of a traditional Pakistani wedding. Throughout the event, there are performances by several South Asian dance groups including CU Bhangra, CU RAAS, TAAL, Dhoom, and a performance by OPS. Furthermore, there is a variety of food available, which includes vegetarian, non-veg, and halal options for all. There is also a DJ playing the latest South Asian (Indian, Bollywood, Punjabi/Bhangra) music. As the biggest OPS event of the year, Hangama attracts over 500 individuals from the CU, NYU, and Morningside Heights community and exemplifies the colorful and vibrant Pakistani culture. Hangama is also a unique opportunity to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds to celebrate a shared appreciation for music, food, learning about different cultures, and having a good time!
