Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I apply for an IGERT fellowship?
Applications to the Ph.D. program in any of the participating departments will be considered for this IGERT fellowship. Students who are interested in this IGERT program are strongly encourage to note this in their personal statements. Students submitting an online application to the School of Engineering and Applied Science or the School of Arts and Sciences should check the box on the application indicating interest in the IGERT program.
  2. If I’m a NSF or DoD Fellow, does it preclude receiving a IGERT Fellowship?
It helps both ways. The IGERT Fellowship funding period can be arranged to complement the NSF, DoD or other fellowships. In fact, having one might strengthen your chances to get the other.
  3. I am not a U. S. citizen or permanent resident. Can I still be considered for this program?
Yes, you can apply as an IGERT Associate. However, only U. S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible for funding under this program.
  4. Do I have to have a co-advisor from another discipline selected when I apply?
It is optional to have it at the time of your application. However it would be good to have your cross-disciplinary mentoring committee set up during your first semester of the Fellowship.
  5. If I am an IGERT fellow, in which department will I get my degree?
IGERT fellows will still have an associated home department, of which their principal research advisor is a member. This is generally the degree-granting department. However, Ph. D. requirements, which are determined by the student’s advising committee, may be adjusted to better reflect the multidisciplinary aspect of the program.
  6. Is there an Open House for the IGERT program?
Yes, for a limited pool of applicants only. The Open House will coincide with departmental open houses and usually take place in March/April.
