| Q1.
How do I join Orchesis? |
-
We hold general meetings at the beginning
of each semester. We invite you to come if you're interested.
Keep looking out for flyers announcing date&place, or, if you would
like to be informed by email, click here.
You must be affiliated with Barnard or Columbia in some way (student, alumni/ae,
professor, etc) in order to gain membership.
|
| Q2.
What style of dances does Orchesis perform? |
-
We are a very eclectic dance group,
performing anything from ballet on pointe, all types of modern, tap, jazz,
funk, hiphop, African, ballroom.... you name it!
-
All of the pieces performed in our shows
are choreographed by students. It's up to you to make it into whatever
style you want.
|
| Q3.
Do you need any experiences to perform with Orchesis? |
-
No experience is necessary. Background
in any dance or dance-related activity is helpful but not required.
Many of our performing members have had previous dance training, but for
others Orchesis is their first dance experience ever.
|
| Q4.
Is there any way to get involved other than by performing on stage? |
-
Yes!! We are constantly looking
for people to help us with "behind-the-scenes" work: lighting/sound, ushers/
ticket sellers, costume coordination, etc. If you are interested,
please contact Elisa Davis, show coordinator, at ed2120@barnard.edu.
-
We are hosting master classes in
various styles and trips to see performances throughout the semester.
Look out for flyers around the campus. If you would like to receive
emails regularly about these opportunities and other Orchesis events, click
"contact" on the main page menu to email us. We will add you to the
Orchesis General Mailing List, which currently has over 260 contacts.
|
| Q5.
Can Columbia grad students or alumnae/i be in Orchesis? |
-
Sure! Our performing members are mostly
undergrads, but grad students are always welcome. Currently there
are about 5 grad students performing with us.
-
Alumnae/i are welcome! You just
need to be able to make the same committment as everyone else.
|
| Q6.
I missed the audition. Can I still perform in the show? |
-
As a general rule, NO, unless
you make specific arrangements through Elisa Davis, our show coordinator at
ed2120@barnard.edu. In the
past, some choreographers have called for more dancers a few weeks after
the audition, but rarely. Please be respectful of the choreographers
and the performing arts philosophy- if you want to perform, you must
come to the audition.
