HOPE 2009

Dear Community Member,

It's the time of year for HOPE!  The NYC Department of Homeless Services' annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) will take place on Monday, January 26, 2009 and we are counting on your help!  With only 5 weeks to go until HOPE 2009, we are launching our volunteer recruitment campaign.  We need 2,000 volunteers to make this a success and your participation is very important.

HOPE is critical to helping us evaluate the effectiveness of our current strategies to overcome street homelessness as well as developing appropriate housing resources for the most vulnerable New Yorkers currently living without shelter. HOPE has been recognized nationally as the gold standard and this is due in large part to your help.

Volunteers for HOPE will be committed to assist us overnight from Monday, January 26 from 10:30 pm until 4:00 am to conduct a survey of homeless individuals in New York City.

Please visit the DHS homepage at www.nyc.gov/dhs and click on the HOPE 2009 logo for details on the survey.  Our new HOPE website offers online registration as well as online orientation for all users.

We also need your help in spreading the word so we also attached our flyer, email to family and friends and email signature instructions.  Contact the HOPE team for HOPE 2009 flyers, posters, mailers, or an email information package to forward to your friends. Get in touch with the team at (212) 607-5365 or send an email toHOPE@dhs.nyc.gov.

Sincerely,

HOPE 2009 Team

City Year Service Opportunity

Hello,

I am reaching out to Columbia University with a unique opportunity to volunteer with the non-profit, City Year.

City Year is a national service organization that unites diverse 17-24 year olds in ten months of community service and civic engagement.  One of the many programs City Year offers to New York City schools is the City Heroes program.  City Heroes introduces high school students to important social issues affecting their communities and helps them understand how to help solve these problems through community service.  The City Heroes not only learn the value of serving others, they also gain the leadership skills and confidence necessary to spark positive change.

In order to make our City Heroes program a success, our full time City Year corps members need the help of volunteer team leaders from the community.  Together, corps members and team leaders deliver and lead the students through the City Heroes program over the course of twelve Saturdays (and two overnight retreats) beginning in January and ending in May.  Team leaders will serve at one of our two sites (East Harlem and the South Bronx) for the duration of the program.  By participating in this program, team leaders will gain valuable training in mentoring youth and get an in-depth look into a thriving non-profit organization here in New York City.

Team Leaders will:
Lead, mentor, and engage teams of 8-10 City Heroes in powerful service during 12 Saturday sessions and 2 overnight retreat.
Facilitate workshops, team discussions and reflection activities during these programs.
Model excellence and accountability for our youth.

We are also recruiting for our Young Heroes Middle School program which is located in Harlem, South Bronx, and Long Island City, Queens.  The attached application says High School City Heroes but both have the same format and questions.

I would like to set up a way to table at Columbia University or reach out to specific groups who are interested in volunteer service.

I hope to hear from you soon.
