Areas of specialization include aesthetics, philosophy of art, theory of literature, studies in Hume and Kant, tragedy, philosophical-psychoanalytic theory.

He has been the recipient of The Mark Van Doren Great Teacher Award; The Van Am Society Distinguished Book Award for Structures of Experience; Award for Contribution to the Core Curriculum (with Robert Belknap).  He has been Co-Chair, Medical Ethics, College of Physicians and Surgeons; Chair, Society of Fellows in The Humanities; Chair.
