Professor Kuhns has been with Columbia since 1950, Professor since 1966.
Areas of Specialization:
Areas of specialization include aesthetics, philosophy of art, theory of literature, studies in Hume and Kant, tragedy, philosophical-psychoanalytic theory.
Publications:
The House, The City and The Judge,: Growth of Moral Awareness in the Oresteia; Structures of Experience; Philosophies of Art and Beauty (with Albert Hofstadtler); Psychoanalytic Theory of Art; Tragedy; Contradiction and Repression; Decameron and The Philosophy of Storytelling, and numerous articles in philosophical and literary journals.
He has been the recipient of The Mark Van Doren Great Teacher Award; The Van Am Society Distinguished Book Award for Structures of Experience; Award for Contribution to the Core Curriculum (with Robert Belknap). He has been Co-Chair, Medical Ethics, College of Physicians and Surgeons; Chair, Society of Fellows in The Humanities; Chair. Literature Humanities; Chair, Program in Interdisciplinary Studies, Columbia University.
