Columbia Physics Graduate Student Seminars (offered as PHYS G6905) are required for first-year graduate students and held in Room 831 Pupin Hall at 10:30am every Friday during the Fall and Spring semesters, unless otherwised announced. There are no regularly scheduled Graduate Student Seminars during the summer. The 2011-2012 seminars are organized by Abhay Pasupathy. Please contact him if you would like to give a presentation.
The purpose of the graduate seminar is to introduce first year graduate students to the on-going research in the Physics Department and in related departments. For those that have not decided what field of reseach they would like to pursue, this is an excellent opportunity to sample the various research opportunities. For those with more definite ideas about the research they would like to pursue, this give them an opportunity to talk directly with the faculty, postdocs, and graduate students carrying out the research. Since first year students are supported during the summer by working with a research group, this seminar lets them sample the type of research they might be involved in during the summer.
