COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN PARTICLE ASTROPHYSICS

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the XENON Dark Matter group of Columbia University , Physics Department and Astrophysics Laboratory. The Columbia group is involved in all aspects of the XENON experimental program, which aims at dark matter Weakly Interacting Massive Particles detection with dual-phase Xe Time projection Chambers (XeTPCs). Currently, the collaboration is completing the commissioning of the XENON100 experiment at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory in Italy . Science data taking is expected to start in Spring 2008. This is a particularly exciting phase of the program, given the sensitivity reach and discovery potential of XENON100. The successful candidate will be available immediately to contribute to the ongoing deployment of the experiment underground, including testing and calibration of the inner detector and the active liquid xenon shield, data analysis, and Monte Carlo simulations of background processes. The candidate is also expected to be involved with the design, simulations and R&D work for the next phase of the XENON program, a ton scale experiment before the end of this decade. A recent Ph.D. in experimental particle astrophysics, high energy physics or a related field is required. Experience with noble liquid detectors and associated charge and light readouts, data analysis and statistical methods, and/or experience with low-background experiments is preferred. Good proficiency in the C/C++ programming language is mandatory. Interested applicants should send an application letter, CV and publication list to Prof. Elena Aprile, XENON Spokesperson, c/o Ms. Trudy Reyes, Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory, Columbia University, 538 W 120th St, NY, NY 10027 or via email to trudy@astro.columbia.edu (subject line: XENON Search), and arrange to have 3 reference letters sent to same. For full consideration, completed applications including reference letters should be received by March 1, 2008; applications received after that date will be considered until the position is filled. Columbia University is committed to diversity and is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. Applications from women or minorities are encouraged.
