Reclaiming Adam Smith, 2006

September 22-23, 2006
Columbia University, New York, NY

Organized by David Johnston (Political Science, Columbia, and CSPT Chair), Akeel Bilgrami (Philosophy, Columbia, and Director of the Heyman Center), Carl Wennerlind (History, Barnard College), and Eileen Gillooly (English and Comparative Literature, Columbia, and Associate Director of The Heyman Center)
Co-sponsored by the Heyman Center for the Humanities (Akeel Bilgrami, Director), the Columbia University  Seminar on Political and Social Thought (David Johnston, Chair) and the Office of the Provost, Barnard College

Description

Adam Smith has been for most of the past century "owned" in a sense by economic conservatives, who are staunchly pro free-market, and critical of the welfare state. The conference brings together specialists from several fields and invites scholarship that considers Adam Smith's more egalitarian sensibilities.
