Biography
Demetrios Caraley (Ph.D. Columbia, 1962) is editor of the journal Political Science Quarterly, President of the Academy of Political Science, and founding director of Columbia's Graduate Program in Public Policy and Administration (1977-1985). A specialist on city government and urban problems, Caraley has published numerous articles on congressional policy towards cities and as editor and contributor, Critical Issues for Clinton's Domestic Agenda (Academy of Political Science, 1994), Doing more With Less: Cutback Management in New York City (Columbia, 1982), and City Governments and Urban Problems (Prentice Hall, 1977). In addition he has been both an appointed and elected official in Westchester County local government. Caraley also publishes in the field of national security policy, including the books The President's War Powers (Academy of Political Science, 1984) and The Politics of Military Unification (Columbia University Press, 1965). He is completing work on a book called Washington Abandons the Cities and is a Russel Sage Foundation Visiting Scholar for 1995-1996. Research Interests: Urban politics and policies, Social and economic problems of large cities, Urban poverty, congressional policy making, National Security Policy, Democratic Political Theory.
