Friday, September 9

Sam Ryan -- Columbia's own starts out the fall season with his guitar and harmonica!!

Sarah Greene -- Sarah creates a distinctive sound with her strong blues-oriented guitar work, haunting melodies, and stark lyrics. Sarah's jazz and blues playing echoes the past while pushing the limits of the genre. She has just released her debut album on the 1-800-PRIME CD label.

Ellis Paul -- This Postcrypt favorite hails all the way from Boston and calls himself an "urban folksinger." With a rich voice, moving guitar playing, and the sensibility of an inner-city social worker, Ellis promises a moving performance. Ellis' recent honors include an appearance at this year's Newport Folk Festival, a coveted Boston Music Award, and the release of his second album, Stories.


Saturday, September 10

Lili Anel -- Lili's debut CD on Palmetto Records, Laughed Last, has received notices from as far away as Hawaii and Japan. Come hear the captivating voice and guitar-playing of this native New Yorker.

Frank Christian -- This acoustic guitar virtuoso is a veteran of the New York folk scene, having appeared at Gerde's Folk City and the Speakeasy. His song "Three Flights Up" was a recent standout on Nanci Griffith's album of covers Other Voices, Other Rooms. He's taking time out from his busy tour as a member of Nanci's Blue Moon Orchestra, so don't miss it!


Friday, September 16

Kick at Heaven -- This eclectic guitar duo of Jean Ganias and Steve Uhler combines elements of blues, country, jazz, pop, and rock into a mix which defies catagorization.

Jon Svetkey -- John's lyrics evoke laughter and nodding approval, provoke debate and heated discussion, and demand attention. He takes folk song traditions and twists them together with contemporary language and rhythm.

Ansel Matthews -- Ansel is a great guitarist with an exceptional voice which has made him a Postcrypt regular for the past several years. If you've already heard Ansel's smooth style and catchy rhythms, you know he's a must-see!

Brian O'Neill -- Brian is half of the NYC duo Minus Ted. He'll be bringing some friends with him to close out the night with his engaging lyrics and guitar-driven sound.


Saturday, September 17

Open Stage -- Folk, blues, bluegrass, jazz, reggae -- you name it! We also welcome poets, storytellers, actors, comics, and performers of all kinds. Performances start at 9:00; sign-up begins promptly at 8:45. Eight to ten minute limit.


Friday, September 23

Chuck Brodsky -- Chuck developed a down-to-earth style as a street singer in Europe before settling in San Francisco. His guitar and harmonica playing will make you angry and happy, joyous and sad. His song, "Blow 'Em Away," is currently being performed by David Wilcox.

5 Chinese Brothers -- They're not Chinese, and they're not brothers, but this quintet has developed a cult following in their 11 years of playing at the Postcrypt. Their debut album Singer, Songwriter, Beggarman, Thief has received rave reviews in Rolling Stone, CMJ, and Newsday.


Saturday, September 24

Wendy Beckerman -- Originally from New Jersey, Wendy has been an active part of New York's acoustic scene for several years. She has recorded several songs for Fast Folk including "I'll Cry Tonight" on 1992's Live at the Postcrypt CD.

Jim Gaudet -- Jim started his career as flat picker and mandolin player, but now sings and strums his guitar. A regular at Albany's respected Caffe Lena, Jim's return engagement at the Postcrypt is always a crowd pleaser.


Friday, September 30

Gabriel Dorman -- A blend of funky acoustic rhythms and soulful harmonies marks Gabriel's debut at the Postcrypt. He's currently recording his debut CD for Palmetto Records, and he will be bringing one of his label-mates for this special performance.

Barbara Kessler -- Barbara has been stunning audiences with her soulful, mesmerizing voice since 1989. She's appeared with John Gorka, Patty Larkin, and the Story, and is featured on Christine Lavin's compilation, Big Times in a Small Town.

The Nields -- This Connecticut-based trio consists of sisters Nerissa and Katryna Nield plus Nerissa's husband, David. Their powerful voices evoke the drive and strength of the Indigo Girls and the harmonic complexity of the Roches.


Saturday, October 1

Andrew Vladeck -- Columbia's own (class of '92) folk and blues man is sure to entertain you with his harmonica and strumming guitar.

Peter Gallway -- Peter is a singer-songwriter whose styles range from a capella to urban-acoustic-funk to jazz-pop. He has also written songs for Bette Midler and has produced albums by Cliff Eberhardt, Aztec Two-Step.

Richard Julian -- Richard Julian's music covers a wide range of influences, but keeps in the tradition of well-crafted songs with smart lyrics and real melodies. He is a fixture at the annual Fast Folk Revue at the Bottom Line, he has appeared at Nashville's respected Bluebird Cafe, and he has toured extensively in Switzerland and Italy.
