January, 1995 Postcrypt Schedule
Postcrypt Coffeehouse
January, 1995
Friday, January 20
- Mike Kramer - This Columbia College student starts off the
Winter '95 season with thoughtful songwriting and excellent guitar and
harmonica playing.
- Maria Sangiolo - This compelling singer/songwriter has a voice that
"sends shivers." She recently released her first CD entitled "eyes of the
heart," which was produced by Brooks Williams. Welcome Maria for her Postcrypt
debut!
- Dave's True Story - This duo of vocalist Kelly Flint and guitarist
David Cantor combines the joyous innocence of the '40s with a deadpan
contemporary irony that perfectly captures the '90s. Vin Scelsa has called
their music "wonderful stuff...reminiscent of Cole Porter." They'll be playing
an extra-long set on this special opening night of the Winter '95 season!
Saturday, January 21
- Gregg Cagno - Gregg is a singer/songwriter/guitarist based in Hoboken,
NJ. He has appeared on several Fast Folk recordings, and tonight marks his
first appearance at the Postcrypt Coffeehouse.
- Kim Forehand - Best known for having a flair for unusual ballads, this
Kansas-based singer/songwriter was a New Folk Winner at the 1993 Kerrville Folk
Festival in Texas. She has appeared live on the "World Cafe" syndicated radio
program, and we welcome her back for her second appearance at Columbia
University.
- Greg Greenway - This Boston-based singer/songwriter recently appeared
on Christine Lavin's "Big Times in a Small Town" compilation, and he was also a
part of last fall's Shelter benefit concert at Carnegie Hall. The Boston Globe
has described Greg's music as "...nothing short of revelatory."
Friday, January 27
- AN EVENING OF BAR NONE RECORDING ARTISTS - Bar None Records is the
Hoboken-based independent label which is known for breaking artists such as
They Might Be Giants and Freedy Johnston. This special showcase night at the
Postcrypt will present four Bar None recording artists. The duo Professor
& Maryanne was discovered by Bar None at CBGBs in the summer of '92.
Hell's Kitchen resident Lonesome Val's debut album was produced by Suzzy
Roche. Kate Jacobs' songwriting covers unusual topics such as nunning
and the Story of O. The duo Drink Me finishes out the night with their
vocal harmonies and collection of weird instruments, including kazoo and Fanta
bottle.
Saturday, January 28
- The Metropolecats - Quite possibly the best jug band in Manhattan -
you'll stomp your feet, slap your thighs, and want to kiss your cousins when
you hear them!
- Christian Bauman - Christian's songs have been covered by Postcrypt
favorites Eddy Lawrence, Jack Hardy, and Wendy Beckerman, and he has appeared
on several Fast Folk albums. He has just released his CD, "Out Here in the
Perimeter," which will be available for the first time at this special
Postcrypt show.
- Raymond Gonzalez and Amy Malkoff - Raymond's songs and Amy's harmonies
are all original, and when asked what type of music they play, they will tell
you "Classical Avant-Folk." Their style has been described as original, witty,
and sophisticated. Using only their voices and steel-string and classical
guitar, it's like nothing you've ever heard before.
Friday, February 3
- Susan Renner Band - Susan delivers a driving acoustic rhythm on her
guitar, backed up by a violinist and bass guitarist. The band plays venues
such as CBGB's Gallery and Sin-é Cafe.
- The Chanting House - Singer Susan McKeown and guitarist Greg Anderson perform original material with a distinctive style
and an acoustic rock sound. They've been written up in
Interview and Time magazines.
Saturday, February 4
- Open Stage - Folk, blues, bluegrass, jazz, reggae - you name it! We
also welcome poets, storytellers, actors, comics, and performers of all kinds.
Performances start at 9:00, sign-up is at 8:45. Eight to ten minute limit.
WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE RECORD RELEASE PARTY ORIGINALLY
SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 25, 1995 HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO DELAYS IN
THE PRODUCTION OF THE CD.
