Postcrypt Coffeehouse

February, 1995

Friday, February 10

Leroy Lange -- An alum of Columbia College, Leroy brings his "urban country music" to our stage with friends Mark Shapiro and Johnny Lockett.

Hugh Blumenfeld -- Hugh says of the Postcrypt, "I love this place! When I play in the city these days (which I don't), this is where I want to be doing it (which I do)."

5 Chinese Brothers -- This popular New York band features several Columbia alums. If you ever had doubts about the real-life applications of the Core Curriculum, this band's original songs are perfect examples.

Saturday, February 11

Postcrypt History Night -- This special night will celebrate 30 years of Postcrypt Coffeehouse with students, staff, and performers from throughout our history. Come meet the founders of the Postcrypt from 1964! Learn the history and view the artifacts of this Columbia institution! Performers will include singer-songwriter David Massengill, fiddle player Bill Christophersen (CC '72) and friends, and Jeff Cannon (son of Postcrypt co-founder Rev. John Cannon). Attendees are invited to bring any Postcrypt-related memorabilia (or photocopies) for donation into our archives.

Friday, February 17

Jon Svetkey -- John's lyrics evoke laughter and nodding approval, provoke debate and heated discussion, and demand attention. He takes folk song traditions and twists them together with contemporary language and rhythm.

Michael Jerling -- A winner of the New Folk competition at 1993's Kerrville Folk Festival, Michael is a singer-songwriter originally from Saratoga Springs, NY. He has two albums out on the Shanachie label, and he also appeared on 1992's Fast Folk Live at the Postcrypt Coffeehouse compact disc.

Sarah Nagourney -- Sarah presents her brand of textural art-pop in her debut at the Postcrypt. She's also probably the first singer-songwriter to have her gigs listed on the society page of the New York Times.

Saturday, February 18

Gabriel Dorman -- Gabriel offers a blend of funky acoustic rhythms and soulful harmonies. Welcome him for his second Postcrypt performance.

Lili Anel -- Lili released her first CD last year and gets airplay on WFUV-FM's City Folk program. Her great vocals and original songs will amaze you.

Stan Moeller & T.S. Baker -- This New Hampshire-based duo describes their act as "new acoustic music," and their original songs contain elements of folk, blues, Latin, and even rock. They are known for tight vocal harmony and a distinctive blending of guitars, piano, cabasa, accordian, and harmonica.

Minus Ted -- Brian O'Neill and friends close out the night with their engaging lyrics and guitar-driven sound.

Friday, February 24

Andrew Vladeck -- Columbia's own (class of '92) folk and blues man may surprise us with a banjo, along with his old guitar and harmonica. He's sure to pack the house!

Richard Julian -- Richard Julian's music covers a wide range of influences, but keeps in the tradition of well-crafted songs with smart lyrics and real melodies. He is a fixture at the annual Fast Folk Revue at the Bottom Line, he has appeared at Nashville's respected Bluebird Cafe, and he has toured extensively in Switzerland and Italy.

The Unsung String Duo -- This duo of guitarist Byron Estep and violinist Matthew Pierce will be playing their stunning instrumental tunes to close out the night.

Saturday, February 25

Burt Swartz -- This regular of our open stages will start the night with his own bizarre music/performance art.

The Return of Ned "Flathead" Landin -- Ned Landin was a fixture on the streets of New York in the late 80's, playing his originals and old blues songs in Central Park and Astor Place. Long a Postcrypt favorite, he relocated to Boston in 1990, but we finally convinced him to make his return to our stage.

Jim Infantino -- Jim gives an edgy, bizarre performance, neighboring on comedy but not satire. He also designed the cover for the Postcrypt Commemorating 30 Years compact disc. He also wears a really big pair of pants.

Friday, March 3

Poetry Night -- A night devoted entirely to spoken word performance, featuring members of the Writing Program at Columbia. Open stage will follow. Sign-up begins at 8:45. 5 minute limit.

Saturday, March 4

Uptown Klezmer -- This Columbia-based quintet will somehow squeeze onto our stage to bring you catchy sounds.

Quay & O'Conor -- Acoustic duo Heather Quay and Lyn O'Conor have a rare chemistry on stage that only thirteen years of friendship can create. Their songs tell stories of love lost, Catholic girls' school, and philandering relatives...

Karen Pernick -- Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Karen was a volunteer at that town's famed club, The Ark, where she was influenced by the likes of Odetta, Doc Watson, and Richard Thompson. Now based in Seattle, she brings her gutsy vocals and engaging demeanor to our stage.

The Wicomicos -- This duo of Carmen Yates (guitar/vocals) and Mikel Campbell (bass/vocals) hails originally from the eastern shore of Maryland, but is now based in New York. They'll be bringing friends David Hamburger and Bob Greene to jam with!
