Postcrypt Coffeehouse

March-April, 1995

Friday, March 24 -- Celebrating Women's History Month

Jane Kelly Williams -- Jane will charm you with her beautiful voice, skilled guitar playing, and sincere songwriting. She has a new album coming out in April.

Petronella -- The feminist folk duo Lucia and Sandy return to the Postcrypt bringing their pleasant harmonies and witty lyrics.

Nedra Johnson -- You might have heard this fantastic bass guitarist last fall at our Outmusic Showcase -- Nedra's back with her big bluesy voice. Come get it and feel good.

Saturday, March 25

Jason Harrod & Brian Funck -- This duo's CD, "Dreams of the Color Blind," was the last project by late producer Mark Heard. Dirty Linen describes their album as "a warm inviting blanket of vocal harmony that lulls you into their intricate lyrics."

Lessick & Lincoln -- Old friends from the 6th grade, Steve Lessick and Rob Lincoln are a guitar and percussion duo from the Philadelphia area. Their original harmonies have been compared to Aztec Two-Step and Simon & Garfunkel.

Ansel Matthews -- Ansel is a great guitarist with an exceptional voice which has made him a Postcrypt regular for several years. He has several recordings, including one produced by Steve Addabbo.

Friday, March 31

Pamela Means -- Pamela has opened shows for the likes of Neil Young, Ani DiFranco, and the Violent Femmes. She recently relocated to Boston from Milwaukee, and makes her Postcrypt debut tonight!

Peter Mulvey -- His lyrics focus on coming of age amidst the tremors and ironies of the last decades of now...plus, fan Jim Infantino says, "he's really killer on guitar."

Chuck Brodsky -- Chuck developed a down-to-earth style as a street singer in Europe before settling in San Francisco. His guitar and harmonica playing will make you angry and happy, joyous and sad. His song, "Blow `Em Away," is currently being performed by David Wilcox.

Hugh Pool -- Catch these traditional and original blues from a Postcrypt favorite. He's got some of the hottest guitar sounds around, and then some! Hugh has a CD, Spirits Treat Me Gently.

Saturday, April 1

Open Stage -- Folk, blues, bluegrass, jazz, reggae you name it! We also welcome poets, storytellers, actors, comics, and performers of all kinds. Performances start at 9:00; sign-up begins promptly at 8:45. Eight to ten minute limit.

Wednesday, April 5 -- Record Release Party at the West End Gate!

Come celebrate the release of our 30th Anniversary compact disc with a special night of music! See live performances by many of the artists on the CD. It's sure to be a crowded night, so we're holding the party at the West End Gate, 113th Street & Broadway, 8PM. Be there!

Friday, April 7 -- Internet Night

All acts on this night were booked over the Internet! Also come hear Andy's 5-minute lecture about folk music on the Internet and how to get connected.

Beverly Greenfield -- Beverly ran the Postcrypt for several years, and now she's back to show off her own talent. We remember her fondly for introducing Pop Tarts onto the Postcrypt menu.

Ilene Weiss -- Ilene's performances capture the full range of her sometimes quirky and always insightful songwriting. She also wears a really cool pair of sneakers!

Bob Franke -- A veteran of the New England folk scene, Bob has three albums on the Flying Fish label and has appeared on A Prarie Home Companion and Mountain Stage. He has led workshops in songwriting at many folk festivals, and he also appeared on Christine Lavin's "Follow That Road" compilation. We are lucky to have him during one of his rare trips into New York City!

Saturday, April 8

Bill Cuddyer -- Based in Boston, Bill has shared bills with folks like Bill Morrissey and Ellis Paul. The Boston Phoenix refers to him as "David Byrne meets Edgar Allen Poe."

Dana Robinson -- This guitar/mandolin/banjo player artfully combines old time music with original compositions. He also runs his own bakery/performance space in Vermont, and he appeared at the Shelter benefit concert last fall at Carnegie Hall.

Radoslav Lorkovic -- Drawing from a multitude of influences ranging from classical and jazz to raw blues, country, and soul, Radoslav has taken on an unusually broad musical spectrum and refined it into his distinctive piano style. He's also a frequent sideman to Greg Brown and Richard Shindell.

April 14 and 15 -- Closed for Easter/Passover

April 21 and 22 -- Furnald Folk Festival

It's the annual Furnald Folk Festival (Furnald Hall, 115th and B'way), featuring The Low Road, Pete & Maura Kennedy, Richard Meyer, Leroy Lange, and many others! Click here for more details.

Friday, April 28

Ina May Wool -- A Barnard alumna, Ina May used to frequent the Postcrypt stage and recently made her return at February's Postcrypt History Night. Welcome back this talented singer-songwriter!

Sarah Greene -- Sarah creates a distinctive sound with her strong blues-oriented guitar work, haunting melodies, and stark lyrics. Sarah's jazz and blues playing echoes the past while pushing the limits of the genre. She has just released her debut album on the 1-800-PRIME CD label.

Ellis Paul -- This Postcrypt favorite hails all the way from Boston and calls himself an "urban folksinger." With a rich voice, moving guitar playing, and the sensibility of an inner-city social worker, Ellis promises a moving performance. Ellis' honors include an appearance at the 1994 Newport Folk Festival, a coveted Boston Music Award, and the release of his second album, Stories.

Saturday April 29

Ted Kesler -- Ted used to run the Postcrypt himself -- now it's a lucky treat to have him on our stage, telling stories and singing songs, tin-whistling and guitar-picking ... he's always full of surprises!

Tanya Savory -- Raised in South Carolina, Tanya has been living in Nashville just over two years, and in that short time has become a regular performer at the renown Bluebird Cafe. She was also a New Folk finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas in '91, '93, and '94.

John Herald -- John performs a combination of bluegrass, folk, Cajun, country, and sparkling original songs! His first band, The Greenbriar Boys, played the Grand Ole Opry and toured with Joan Baez. We're glad to welcome him back to the `Crypt!

Finis! We are closed for the summer, see you next fall!
