Ric Burns, Martin S. Kaplan, Robert M. Rosencrans, Stephen D. Solender And George L. Van Amson Honored With John Jay Awards

Ric Burns, Martin S. Kaplan, Robert M. Rosencrans, Stephen D. Solender and George L. Van Amson are the Columbia College alumni who were honored with John Jay Awards on March 28. The black-tie event in Low Memorial Library celebrated the professional accomplishments of these alumni in fields as diverse as filmmaking, business, philanthropy and law.

Named for the first Chief Justice of the United States, a member of the Class of 1764, the John Jay Awards are the College's highest honors for distinguished professional achievement. The alumni who received the awards this year are:

Ric Burns ('78) is an Emmy award-wining documentary filmmaker best known for the five-part, 10-hour New York: A Documentary Film, which aired on public television this year, and for his work on The Civil War , which he co-produced and co-wrote.

Martin S. Kaplan ('61), a former president of the Columbia College Alumni Association, is a senior partner in the Boston law firm of Hale and Dorr and was chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Education under Governor William Weld and state representative to the Education Commission of the States.

Robert M. Rosencrans, ('49) former chairman of Columbia's Board of Visitors, was an original partner in the Madison Square Garden Network, helped set up Columbia Cable in the Pacific Northwest, and helped organize C-SPAN.

Stephen D. Solender ('60) is president and CEO of United Jewish Communities, the newly formed organization overseeing Jewish philanthropies.

George L. Van Amson ('74), a principal and senior equities trader at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, is a member of Columbia's Board of Trustees.

The awards evening, whose co-chairs are George J. Ames ('37) and Carlos Muñoz ('57), featured a video presentation of a segment of Burns' New York: A Documentary Film and a musical performance by Elizabeth Paw ('00), a leading cast member of the Broadway hit Miss Saigon. The event benefited the John Jay National Scholarship Program.
