This year, a special citation will be awarded to Francisco Santos for his bold columns in El Tiempo, the leading daily newspaper owned by his family in Bogota, Colombia. Santos has used his columns to speak out against kidnapping and massacres, and he has called for civil society to take a strong role in finding peaceful solutions to the problems wracking Colombia.

Santos survived a kidnapping a decade ago; now, after writing against guerrilla violence, Santos has fled his country because of death threats against him.
