First U.S. Exhibition of Rare Korean Paintings

Columbia University's Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Gallery will unveil The Fragrance of Ink: Korean Literati Paintings of the Choson Dynasty (1392-1910), the first exhibition of its fall season, at a press showing on Wednesday, August 14th, at 11 AM. Kim Woo-Lin, curator of the Korea University Museum, and You Young-Dai, professor in the department of Korean Literature and chairman of the Research Division of the Korean Studies Institute at Korea University, will lead reporters in a tour of the gallery and give a brief presentation in Korean with English translation.

The exhibition consists of 62 works - hanging scrolls, album leaves, fans and screens - from the collection of the University of Korea in Seoul. This exhibition is the first American presentation of artwork from a major museum in South Korea to be devoted exclusively to the traditional scholarly painting of Korea's last royal dynasty.

Columbia's Wallach Art Gallery is the first of five stops that the exhibition will make in the United States between August 1996 and September 1997. It is the only New York showing and the only one on the East Coast.

The exhibition was organized by the Korean Studies Institute and the Korea University Museum of Korea University, and circulated by the Smart Art Museum at the University of Chicago. It is supported by a grant from the Hyundai Group. The showing at Columbia is made possible by Columbia's Center for Korean Research (East Asian Institute) with thanks to the Korea Foundation.

Copies of the exhibition catalogue and photographic prints will be available.

(The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery is located on the eighth floor of Schermerhorn Hall on the campus of Columbia University. Enter the campus at 116th Street from Broadway or Amsterdam Avenue. A guard will direct you to Schermerhorn Hall, or call for more specific instructions.)
