Nicholas J. Nicholas Jr., former president of Time Inc., has been elected chairman of the Advisory Board of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Dean Joan Konner announced today (Monday).
Mr. Nicholas succeeds Arthur O. Sulzberger, chairman of The New York Times Company. Both men have served on the 12-member board since its creation in 1989. Mr. Sulzberger will continue as a member.
The board advises the school on trends in journalism, helps evaluate programs, strengthens ties to the journalism industry and profession, and identifies resources for the school.
Mr. Nicholas is an investor in privately owned startup media-technology companies. He joined Time in 1964, was named president of the firm in 1986 and served as co-chief executive officer of Time Warner Inc. until 1992.
He is a director of the Bankers Trust New York Corporation, Boston Scientific Corporation and Xerox Corporation, and he serves on the boards of several privately owned media companies. He has been a member of the President's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations and the President's Commission on Environmental Quality. He is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School.
