Abba Eban will return to the Columbia campus next Monday, Nov. 18, to address the first Lionel Trilling Seminar for 1996-97.
The former Israeli foreign minister and ambassador to the United States and United Nations will discuss "The Peace Process in the Middle East" at 8 P.M. in the Rotunda of Low Library. The public is invited at no charge.
Mr. Eban was a visiting professor and senior research associate at Columbia from 1974 to 1976, teaching courses in modern diplomacy and case histories of war and peace in the Middle East.
At next Monday's seminar he will be joined by discussants Adam Michnik, the human rights activist and editor of Gazeta Wyborcza, the new independent daily in Poland, and Jack Snyder, professor of political science at Columbia.
Mr. Eban in 1948 argued for the admission of Israel to the United Nations, and when that succeeded, he was named the country's permanent representative to the U.N. In 1950 he became Israel's ambassador to the U.S. Later he was elected to the Knesset and served his country as minister for foreign affairs from 1966 to 1974. He has been an active scholar and author.
Mr. Michnik is a founder and a leading tactician of Poland's Solidarity movement who was arrested many times and imprisoned. He is an outspoken deputy in the Polish parliament and currently is a visiting professor in the East and Central European Program in the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research.
Professor Snyder, who joined the Columbia faculty in 1982, teaches courses on international politics, Russian foreign and security policy, nationalism and grand strategies of the great powers, among other subjects.
