Columbia to Hold Memorial Service for Carol Hamilton

A memorial service for Carol Hamilton, press secretary to the late Commerce Department Secretary Ronald Brown, will be held in St. Paul's Chapel at Columbia University on Friday, April 26, at 3 P.M.

Ms. Hamilton, deputy director of the department's Office of Public Affairs, was a member of Secretary Brown's party on the plane that crashed in Croatia April 3, killing all aboard.

She was the daughter of Charles V. Hamilton, the Wallace S. Sayre Professor of Political Science at Columbia, and Dona Cooper Hamilton, associate professor of sociology and social work at Lehman College of the City University of New York.

Speakers will include Columbia Professor and former New York City Mayor David N. Dinkins, U.S. Representative Charles Rangel, civil rights leader Jesse Jackson and George Stephanopoulos, senior advisor to President Bill Clinton. The Rev. H. Scott Matheney, campus minister and director of the Earl Hall Center at Columbia, will preside.

Carol Hamilton, 36, was born at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, graduated from Boston College and worked for Chase Manhattan Bank before starting her own public relations firm in New York and becoming an executive with Planned Parenthood. She was press secretary for the Clinton-Gore campaign in New York State in 1992 and was a member of the inaugural committee in January of 1993. She had been Mr. Brown's chief press aide since March 1993.
