A journalism faculty member since 1992, he has been associate dean for academic affairs since 1995. He also teaches a seminar in investigative reporting and a course in sports reporting.
Before joining Columbia, Mr. Padwe was a senior editor at Sports Illustrated for 12 years, directing coverage of professional football, basketball, boxing and track and field, among others. He also directed reporting on major investigations into corruption and abuses in the sports world. He was deputy sports editor of The New York Times from 1981 to 1984 and was editor of Sports Monday in 1980. Previously, he reported for Newsday, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Newspaper Enterprise Association, United Press International and the Associated Press. He currently serves as a consultant to ESPN.
He has written three books on basketball and golf and has been named Sportswriter of the Year by the National Headliners Club. He earned the B.A. in journalism at The Pennsylvania State University.
Mr. Padwe assumed leadership of the Journalism School Jan. 1 when Joan Konner stepped down as dean, and he will serve as acting dean until July 1, when Tom Goldstein moves from the journalism school at the University of California at Berkeley to become dean at Columbia.
