Columbia University Hosts World Music Concerts

April 9 & 11 Concerts at Miller Theatre Feature Javanese and Indian Music

Some of the most mystical and mesmerizing world music will be performed in concerts at Columbia University's Miller Theatre on April 9 and 11. On Wednesday, April 9, The Wesleyan Gamelan Ensemble will perform an evening of Central Javanese Music. On Friday, April 11, today's leading classical Indian sarod (lute) master Ustad Amjad Ali Khan will perform in concert. Columbia's Miller Theatre is located at 2960 Broadway, directly adjacent to the University's main gate at Broadway and 116th Street. Tickets, which are $20 and $15; $7 for students and senior citizens, are on sale at the Miller Theatre box office (open Monday - Friday, noon - 6 p.m.). Tickets may also be reserved by calling the box office (212) 854-7799 and by fax (212) 678-8503. The Wesleyan Gamelan Ensemble, under the direction of I.M. Harjito and Sumarsam, is based at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. The sounds of the traditional Gamelan, featuring assorted percussion instruments, are indescribably beautiful and their effects on listeners range from mystifying to magical. In fact, French composer Claude Debussy was dramatically influenced in his musical thinking when he first heard a Javanese gamelan at the Paris Exposition of 1889. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is today's leading classical Indian sarod (lute) master. Known throughout the world for his mesmerizing performances, he descended from the legendary Mian Tansen and is a complete virtuoso - - a master of both the centuries-old classical Indian performance traditions and the sarod itself, one of the world's most beautiful and complex musical instruments. 3.31.97 19,086
