Practicum FAQs

Who should take this course?

The Teaching Practicum is open to all graduate students in the Department of Psychology, and is recommended for both first and second-year graduate students as well as for more advanced graduate students who are seriously contemplating an academic career.

What is the Practicum about?

The Practicum is designed with two complementary purposes in mind: to foster the development of graduate students as future teachers of psychology, and to enhance their efforts as teaching assistants in our undergraduate program .

Course topics may include: teaching goals and strategies; effective lectures; teaching large classes; course design and syllabus preparation; motivation and critical thinking; facilitating discussion; assessment of learning; teaching all the students; academic integrity; the psychological science of teaching; technology and teaching; academic careers.

When is the Practicum offered?

The Practicum is typically offered every other year, and may be repeated for credit. We try to schedule the Practicum at a time when all gaduate students are able to attend. In Fall 2011, we will meet on Tuesdays from 10:40 - 12:30 in 200C.

Graduates of the Teaching Practium are welcome to retake it for credit, or to attend selected sessions of the current Practicum without registering for the course. Psychology faculty and post-docs are also invited to attend selected sessions.
