COURSE DESCRIPTION (S3240D)

A selective review of theory and research on the communicative use of language. Topics include speech production and comprehension, the construction of speakers' intentions, effects of perspective and audience design, and the vocal communication of affect.

Requirements: Half of the class grade is based on class participation, and half is based on a brief research paper. Students lead class discussions about the assigned readings and carry out a brief research paper on an area of interest. The final chapter of the research paper is a proposed scientific experiment.
