How to find the Department of Psychology at Columbia University

The main entrance to Columbia's Morningside campus is on 116th street and Broadway. Enter the main gate and walk until you reach the steps. Turn left up the steps, heading north toward the right side of Low Library. Schermerhorn Hall is the fourth building on your right, on the Amsterdam Ave. side of the campus, to the right of Uris.

On entering via this route, you will be on the fourth floor of the building. Turn left to reach the Department Office in room 406 Schermerhorn Hall.

An alternate route to the Dept. of Psychology is through the back door of Schermerhorn Extension, just west of the intersection of 119th St. and Amsterdam Avenue. Take the elevator to the 4th floor, turn left and go up a small flight of stairs to reach Schermerhorn Main where the dept. office (406) is located.

Wheelchair accessibility. Both entrances to Schermerhorn are equipped with wheelchair lifts, but the back entrance is the more direct route. The security guard at the booth near the entrance should have a key to the lift, but it is still a good idea to contact Security in advance of your visit. Traveling to Columbia University's Morningside Campus

By Public Transportation:

  • Subway (NYC Subway May): - The #1 and #9 trains stop at the Columbia University station at West 116th Street and Broadway, and also stops at both Pennsylvania Station (Seventh Ave. between 31st & 33rd Street) and the Port Authority Bus Terminal (between Eighth and Ninth Aves. & 40th and 42nd Streets). From Grand Central Station, Shuttle service is available to Times Square , where it is possible to transfer to the #1 or #9 local. The express (#2 & #3) stop at the 96th Street station where it is necessary to cross the platform and board the local #1 or 9..
  • Bus (Manhattan Bus Map): Four bus lines (M4, M5, M11, M104) serve the Columbia neighborhood and stop directly in front of campus. Cross-town buses connect with the 1 or 9 trains on Broadway or Seventh Avenue.

From the Airports:

  • LaGuardia, JFK and Newark Airports: The easiest way to reach Columbia University from the airport is by taxi. The average fare from LaGuardia Airport, the closest airport to the campus, is $25. This includes tolls and tips. Kennedy Airport has a flat fare of $30 to any single stop in Manhattan. This does not include tolls and tip which will add another $10. Taxi service from Newark Airport is $65 including tolls and tips.
  • Bus Service: Gray Line Express 212.315.3006, provides bus service from both LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports to Grand Central Station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The trip from LaGuardia takes from 30-45 minutes and costs $10. It takes 45-60 minutes from Kennedy at a cost of $12. The M60 (MTA Manhattan Bus Schedule), a city bus to/from LaGuardia is convenient to/from (116th & Broadway-1/2 block up is the bus stop) and costs the price of a standard city fare: $1.50. The MTA offers a Kennedy Airport shuttle bus to/from Kennedy Airport connecting to the subway A line. The shuttle/train trip takes approx. 120 minutes to/from upper westside and costs the standard city fare: $1.50. Olympia Trails 212.964.6233, provides bus service from Newark Airport to Penn Station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The trip takes 45-60 minutes and costs $10 per person. From the Port Authority Bus Terminal follow the subway directions listed below.

By Car:

  • The main entrance to the Columbia campus is located at 116th Street and Broadway in Manhattan. Columbia is best reached by taking the 95/96th Street exit of the Henry Hudson Parkway (West Side Highway). Use the 95th Street off ramp and turn left onto Riverside Drive. Proceed north to 116th Street. A right turn at 116th Street leads you to the campus s gate.
    To reach the "back door" entrance to Schermerhorn Hall, at 119th St. and Amsterdam Ave., follow the above route but continue north on Riverside Drive to 120th Street. Turn right on 120th and then right at Amsterdam Avenue. The next light will be 119th Street, where you'll find the "back door" entrance to Schermerhorn Hall.

  • From the North: (1) Take the New York Thruway (Route 87) to the Cross Bronx Expressway in the direction of the George Washington Bridge. Bear right as you approach the bridge and take the exit for the Henry Hudson Parkway south. (2) The New England Thruway (I-95) becomes the Cross Bronx Expressway. Proceed as above. (3) Take the Saw Mill Parkway south or the Cross Country Parkway west to the Henry Hudson Parkway south. Proceed as above.

  • From the East: Take the Grand Central Parkway or Long Island Expressway west to the Cross Island Parkway north. Cross over the Throgs Neck Bridge to the Cross Bronx Expressway in the direction of the George Washington Bridge. Proceed as above.

  • From the South and West: Take the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) north or I-80 east to the George Washington Bridge. As you cross the bridge, be careful to exit onto the Henry Hudson Parkway south. Proceed as above.

  • From Long Island: Take the Long Island Expressway or the Grand Central Parkway west to the Cross Island Parkway north. Cross the Throgs Neck Bridge onto the Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95 south) Proceed as above. Take the Saw Mill Parkway south or the Cross Country Parkway west to the Henry Hudson Parkway south.
