On behalf of all the members of Columbia University's Department of Public Safety,
I welcome you to our website.
Since January 1, 2004, what was formerly known as the Security Department has
now been renamed the Department of Public Safety. We have changed our name to
reflect a change in the way we do business. Today, we are committed to working more
closely with the Columbia University community to make our campus, and the
surrounding environment, as safe as it can possibly be.
We are doing this by adhering faithfully to our values of "Pride - Professionalism - Service."
We are also doing it by engaging everyone in the business of public safety. In the aftermath
of September 11, 2001, we know all too well that security affects us all. Each of us has a
duty to be as prepared as we can be. One of the ways we are helping with this is by educating
and informing the people we serve so that they can be better equipped to play a role in ensuring
their own well being. The information contained on our website is an important part of these
efforts. It is my sincere hope that you will find our website both informative and user friendly.
As we strive to make Columbia a safe community, we realize that our success will ultimately
depend upon how well we are able to work with you, our neighbors. We welcome your input and ask
for your support.
