COLUMBIA POWER FACT Columbia Tops Harvard in University Publicity Survey olumbia edged Harvard for the top spot in a recent statistical analysis of the news coverage of major academic institutions. Penn, Chicago and Stanford finished third through fifth respectively in a study that looked at the top 50 circulation national newspapers including The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and the top three national news magazines, Time, Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report over the time period of Sept. 1, 1996 to Sept. 1, 1997.
The statistical analysis was performed by the research division of Burrelle's news monitoring service using the DIALOG, Dow Jones News/Retrieval and NEXIS on-line services. Because of the tens of thousands of news stories involved, no attempt was made to distinguish among types of news story, for example a research story versus a wedding announcement. The figures below represent the individual news stories and news items that mentioned a specific college or university in the survey. Multiple mentions of a school within a single story were not counted, but a single story might have mentioned two or more universities.
