Professor Qi Wenxin, right, of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, assisted by Dartmouth Professor Hua-yuan Li Mowry, makes rubbings of the Oracle Bone Collection in the C.V. Starr East Asian Library last week. Dating from the Shang Dynasty (12th century B.C.E.), the bones were used for divination, and are among the earliest examples of Chinese writing. The library's major collection of oracle bones was assembled by the late-Professor of Chinese L.C. Goodrich from various donations to Columbia.
